Membership Categories

CMS welcomes a diverse range of medical professionals:

Practicing Physicians:

Active medical practitioners across all specialties.

Residents and Fellows:

Physicians in postgraduate training programs.

Medical Students:

Individuals enrolled in accredited medical schools.

Retired Physicians:

Physicians who have concluded active practice.

Practice Administrators:

Leaders managing medical practice operations.

Membership in CMS also includes concurrent membership in ISMS, providing access to a broader network and additional resources.

Categories

Membership status and the corresponding dues are determined by your professional status on January 1st of each year.

Physicians in their first four years of practice out of residency are eligible for discounted rates:

  • A physician in the 1st year out of residency qualifies as a 1st Year member.
  • A physician in the 2nd year out of residency qualifies as a 2nd Year member.
  • A physician in the 3rd year out of residency qualifies as a 3rd Year Member.
  • A physician in the 4th year out of residency qualifies as a 4th Year member.
  • A physician in the 5th year out of residency and thereafter qualifies as a Regular member.

Physicians duly licensed in the State of Illinois to practice medicine in all its districts, who are residents of, or practice in Cook County, and are of good moral and professional standing.

Physicians duly licensed to practice medicine in all its districts serving as full-time employees of national medical organizations with headquarters in Cook County subject to the recommendation of the Membership Committee and approval of the Council of the Chicago Medical Society.

Physicians, otherwise eligible who are licensed in one of the states of the United States but not licensed in Illinois, who are not engaged in the active practice of medicine but are employed in an allied medical activity not requiring licensure.

Physicians serving full-time as medical officers in any Branch of the Armed Services, in the United States Public Health Service, or the Veterans Administration, so long as they are actively engaged in such service, and thereafter if they have not been retired for physical disability or after long and honorable service.

A physician duly licensed in Illinois serving full time as a resident or fellow in a program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education may be elected a Residency Members.

Bona fide Students of Illinois medical schools or students whose permanent address is in Cook County and are enrolled in medical programs deemed reputable and in good standing by the Department of Professional Regulation of the State of Illinois.

Members of the Society who have been in good standing for 1 year immediately preceding retirement from all facets of medical practice or other significant, gainful occupation may, on their written application be made a Retired Member by vote of the Council, and shall have all rights and privileges of membership.

Members who have been in good standing for thirty-five years (ten of which are in the Chicago Medical Society) and who have attained the age of 70 may upon application to the Council be made “Emeritus Members” by vote of the Council, and shall be exempt from dues January 1 of the following year. Emeritus members shall have all rights and privileges of membership. Credit for prior membership in fellow constituent state or county medical societies may be accorded such applicants.
